Background
Most tow jobs can be broken down into several different categories; some firms will handle all types while others are more specialized.
Traditional TowsThis tow results when a vehicle breaks down and needs to be towed in for repairs or needs immediate road service. Time is usually of essence in these cases as normally the vehicle is stranded in an undetermined place. When these vehicles are picked up they are either towed directly to a predetermined repair shop or to the towing company's storage lot until the damage to the vehicle can be assessed. These types of tows are billed at a special road service or hook-up price plus a per-mile charge.
Specialty TowsThis type of tow is usually set up ahead of time and can involve towing large objects such as moving airplane parts and fuselage, removing items from demolition sites, hauling barges, etc. Pricing on this type of special tow is usually negotiated in advance by a contract.
Motor Club TowsThe same circumstances may apply as with the traditional tow except certain towing firms contract with motor clubs to do towing or related road service at fixed prices that have been predetermined with the contracting clubs.
Illegally Parked TowsOften times the tow company will have contracts with municipalities or business owners to remove vehicles illegally parked. These types of tows are sometimes difficult as owners are usually unaware that their vehicle has been towed and often they become agitated when they have to pay to have their vehicle released. |
